IRON ORE TRAIN

The iron ore train from Zouerat in Mauritania is one of the world's longest and heaviest trains, transporting iron ore from the mines in Zouerat to the port of Nouadhibou, a distance of approximately 700 km (430 miles). The train is operated by the iron ore company of Mauritania (SNIM) and is an essential part of the country's economy.

The train is made up of around 200 wagons, each capable of carrying up to 84 tons of iron ore, and is pulled by three to four diesel-electric locomotives. The train operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and makes the journey from Zouerat to Nouadhibou in about 15 hours.

 

The iron ore train has become a popular attraction for tourists visiting Mauritania, as it provides a unique and unforgettable experience. Many tourists choose to ride on the roof of the wagons, which is a common practice for locals, to get a better view of the stunning desert landscape and the train passing through it. The iron ore train from Zouerat is an iconic part of Mauritania's history and culture, and it continues to be an important transportation link for the country's economy.
