ATAR

Capital of the Adrar region, Atar is today known for its valuable dates. A caravan city and crossroads, it was founded in the 17th century and is the gateway for tourists to visit the ruins of the ancient Moorish cities of Waadan and Chinguetti. It was an important stop in the Paris-Dakar Rally, the world's longest off-road race, held every January.

In the city center there are a handful of well-stocked shops and a picturesque permanent market where haggling is essential for any purchase. The market is located near a large roundabout, near which the main businesses are located, including exchange houses. The artisans' workshops with daggers, tea sets, silver decorations, ornaments, carpets and leather are also particularly interesting.
